Mormon Health Code ("Word of Wisdom")

Drinking and Smoking in Mormonism

Devout Mormons follow the "Word of Wisdom," a health code revealed to Joseph Smith in 1833.

According to a Mormon website, "God promises great physical and spiritual blessings to those who follow the Word of Wisdom." The Word of Wisdom prohibits:

  1. smoking or any use of tobacco;
  2. use of illegal drugs;
  3. drinking coffee or black tea; and
  4. drinking alcohol.

Contrary to popular belief, the Word of Wisdom does not prohibit the use of caffeine. However, many Mormons regard this as the intent of the prohibition of coffee and tea so they also avoid caffeinated sodas.
